This humble residence in urban Bengaluru stands three stories tall and covers an area of 3,700 square feet. It belongs to Tarun, who works in an IT company, and Sneha, a baker, along with their daughter and his parents.
The courtyard house is situated on a corner plot measuring 40 feet by 45 feet, bordered by neighbouring plots to the north and west, with roads adjacent to the south and east. A distinctive honge mara (Indian Birch) tree flourishes on the eastern side, accompanied by several smaller trees.
Design Features
The main entrance leads into a compact
foyer with a low ceiling height that
transitions into a double-height living
space. This design creates an experience
reminiscent of historic monuments, where
the volume of the space expands as one
moves through it.
The courtyard, located in the northeast corner of the house, is surrounded by the main living functions. This double-height courtyard is enclosed on the north by a sturdy wall and features jali (lattice) work on the east side. Large windows allow filtered light to illuminate key spaces such as the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The jali walls serve as privacy screens while diffusing harsh sunlight from the south, ensuring good air circulation for the bedrooms located in the southwest.
On the first floor, the study is positioned between the master bedroom in the southwest and the daughter’s room in the northwest, which overlooks the double-height living space. The daughter’s room features a bay window that overlooks the courtyard, maintaining a visual connection to this green space.
Throughout the house, pockets of greenery are strategically placed, establishing a cohesive bond between the interior and exterior environments.
